VIETNAM, 19th CENTURY - Lot 47
VIETNAM, 19th CENTURY Important mirror in the shape of a bronze disc with a brown patina, decorated on the main side with twelve concentric bands of radiating and geometric motifs, stylized bells and waves. The central button in relief, decorated with three characters. The reverse side, in smooth brass. The mirror rests on a wooden support carved and openwork of sapechees among clouds. (Some oxidation) An important bronze and brass disc, brown patina, mirror. Carved and openwork wooden base. (Some oxidation) Diam. 47 cm - D. 18 1/2 in. PROVENANCE : Former Louis Blanchet collection N. B. The book "Les miroirs de bronze du Musée de Hanoï" by Léon Vandermeersch allows us to understand the role of these objects dedicated to rituals implying the existence of a graphic and aesthetic symbolic meaning. We can compare the decoration of our mirror with the geometric and radiating decorations present on the tympanums of the rain drums of the Dong Son culture.
