Vartan MAKHOKIAN (1869-1937) The shore. Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard, monogrammed lower right "W.M". Framed. H. 27,5 x L. 38 cm (at sight) Best known for his seascapes, Vartan Makhokian was born in Trabzon and studied at the Berlin Academy from 1891, where he was a student of Eugen Bracht and Hans Gude. After his studies, he went to the Crimea and met the artist Ivan Aivazovsky. In 1895, Vartan Makhokian returned to Trabzon and witnessed the massacres of the Hamidians. He flees to Europe and He fled to Europe and began to exhibit there, other exhibitions of his works are also organized in Egypt. In 1914, Vartan Makhokian settled in Nice, after having lived temporarily in Denmark, Italy and Trabzon.
