GEORGES REMI DIT HERGÉ (1907-1983) - Lot 67
GEORGES REMI DIT HERGÉ (1907-1983) Les Cigares du Pharaon, red pellior spine, 4th plate A18, 4 HT color, large unpublished image, 30th mile. Dark blue endpapers. Pagination 4-127. Edition 4,000 copies (Oct. 1942). Hergé writes to Charles Lesne on July 18, 1942 to give his opinion on the photogravure proofs of the 8 large images: "Cigars of the Pharaoh": here, I'm clearly guilty. The "du" on the Egyptian figures is illegible. I should have had a "serti" executed as for "L'Oreille cassée". Mea culpa." This explains why the cover was never used again... It should also be noted that the print run of 4,000 copies makes it the rarest of the 8 large A18 images. This unique copy was identified and recognized by the BDM a few years ago for its exceptional green colors, brighter than the ordinary pale green of this edition. No other copy with this inking on the front cover is known. Near-new condition for this 81-year-old album, corners and edges very slightly rubbed in places. The signatures are close to new, with no foxing or tears. This exceptional copy with its warm colors is a grail for collectors...
