History
This type of rocaille furniture appeared in France as early as the 18th century.
In 1780-1781, the Duc de Penthièvre commissioned carpenter François II Foliot to furnish the circular salon of the "chaumière aux coquillages" (shell cottage) he had built in the grounds of his château de Rambouillet.
In the twentieth century, certain Rocaille models of the same type are also known, created by Emilio Terry, but also and above all by Armand-Albert Rateau in a very similar typology and well catalogued in his monograph.
