GEORGES REMI DIT HERGÉ (1907-1983) - Lot 119
GEORGES REMI DIT HERGÉ (1907-1983) Indian ink line illustration, circa 1943/1944, relating to the Mysterious Star for a puzzle Drawing: H 20.9 x W 25.1 cm Paper: H 25.9 x W 30.1 cm Framed piece A certificate from the Comité d'authentification des oeuvres d'Hergé dated December 6, 2016 will be given to the buyer. This remarkable illustration by Hergé enjoys a high level of recognition, which places it prominently in the "graphic pantheon" of twentieth-century international comics. L'étoile mystérieuse (The Mysterious Star), published directly in color in 1943, recounts Tintin's adventures around the vertiginous fall of a meteor. First seen through the telescope of Professor Calys, this meteor, which has fallen into the sea and into which Tintin is the first to plant his green flag, has extraordinary powers. After throwing an apple at it, Tintin discovers that the fruit becomes a tree in a matter of hours. Tintin must then set off on a frantic race, pursued by a gigantic dragonfly, a frightening metamorphosis of the little worm present in the apple thrown by the hero. Tintin takes possession of the calystene meteorite, named after the discoverer of this mysterious star, and it's worth noting that this fictional scene is highly topical: the magical material is reminiscent of the new research that has become indispensable to the recent industry of saving the planet. For the puzzle, Charles Lesne, Louis Casterman's right-hand man, asked Hergé to remove the spider, which had become monstrous because it could frighten young readers. The scene of Tintin and Snowy fleeing among the explosive mushrooms became the symbol of the young man's extraordinary adventures. Perfectly depicted in this great graphic diagonal of running characters, this illustration alone demonstrates Hergé's undeniable talent. In fact, many collectors consider this period to be Hergé's finest graphic period, when he was at the peak of his art, and when he created the six fabulous album covers for the adventures of Tintin.
